So what is an SMS Keyword?
SMS Keywords are a one-word phrase that identifies a vendor’s product, service, event, organization, or market positioning. SMS Keywords consist of letters and/or numbers that can be sent to a host mobile number in order to trigger a customized response. When an advertised keyword is received, the vendor’s response text message is automatically sent to the initiator (a prospect or customer) who, demonstrated by their action, must be interested in the product or services offered. This response can include Mobile Coupons (we love mobile coupons!) or links to a vendor’s website. All initiators act through interest in the product or services offered by a vendor. Attract interest to products or services and any response is a lead and more importantly, a potential sale.
Why would I want a SMS Keyword?
As at December 2013, 133% of Australians own a mobile phone*, and today, more than 50% are using their phone to search locally. This mobile interactive communication median offers Australian small businesses the real opportunity to connect with a prime responsive audience with which to work and to grow their own communication list and to build their business relationships. Adding an SMS keyword into your promotional campaigns is a great way to engage, retain and interact with your customers which in the future will increase your bottom line.
How do SMS Keywords work?
SMS is not only a teenage addiction, but it is built into every modern mobile phone and used by people of all ages and personal interests. The SMS function is, of course, native to a mobile phone. This means that users do not have to download any apps nor indeed worry about how messages are formatted – the SMS function just works easily!
To leverage this powerful mobile communication medium, it’s all about businesses building a mobile contact list, and then attracting and continually incentivising customers to buy. Gaining a new customer is one thing, retaining them is the key to enduring success!
SMS Keywords allow prospects/customers to text an advertised keyword to a host number which then triggers an auto-response reply back to the prospect, and at the same time forwards by SMS and email the confirmation with the details of the prospect/customer – it all happens in seconds!.
As an example, on your Social Media sites, TV, flyers or print you could have text content such as – “To get alerts on special VIP events and special offers, Text CLUB to 0491 150 811”. The message will be received and handled by the Hillsdon Mobile Marketing Services system which then in turn replies to the enquiry and an SMS and email will be sent with the prospect/customer’s details so you (as the keyword custodian – in this example “CLUB”) can add them to your mobile list.
How do SMS Coupons work?
Did you know that mobile coupons are redeemed 10x more than traditional coupons!
SMS Coupons allow prospects or customers to text an advertised keyword to a response number, and then the Hillsdon Mobile Marketing System will automatically send the prospect/customer an SMS coupon which includes the offer, serial number and date of validity. Once the coupon has been sent, the business or organisation will receive the contact and coupon details by SMS and email.
As an example, in a print ad from Hillsdon Mobile Marketing Services you might have – “Text COUPON to 0491 150 811 To get your 2 for 1 deal". To claim the SMS coupon the prospect or customer would SMS the advertised keyword and would then receive the mobile coupon by SMS. To redeem that SMS Coupon they would visit the restaurant and redeem the offer.
Advertise the keyword on an A-Frame outside your restaurant, to get them into your restaurant. Advertise the keyword on your menu, napkins, flyers, anything – this is a great strategy to build up your mobile list of customers.
Mobile Coupons work! – the statistics say that mobile coupons are redeemed 10x more than traditional coupons. That makes sense because their mobile phone with the coupon is in their pocket, not on a piece of paper on the fridge!
How do I make my Keyword work for my Business?
One word – Incentivize! Encourage your customers with a reward, coupon, or deal to your mobile VIP Club for great offers and also invites to special events – it just works brilliantly!
If you keep the following format for your SMS Keyword and you can’t go wrong:
“[HMMS] [To get the latest mobile marketing offers], [Text MYDEAL to 0491 150 811]”
[Your Business or Brand Name], [The Offer], [The Call to Action] – Simple!
Whats the cost per SMS with my Keyword
Zero, Zip, Zilch. For each keyword received by the Hillsdon Mobile Marketing Services system, one SMS will go to the recipient and one will go to the number designated by the business entity that acquired the keyword. As part of the Hillsdon Mobile Marketing Services keyword rental service there is absolutely no charge or fees for delivery of an SMS up to 300 keyword enquiries per month. However, there will be an additional keyword rental charge for the next block of 300 keyword enquiries. Hillsdon Mobile Marketing Services is not an SMS broadcasting service.
For clarification, let’s say that your keyword activated response was 300 characters (1 standard SMS = 160 characters) – that means that for one keyword response, 2 SMS’s are used to send the SMS to the enquirer, then 1 SMS is forwarded onto you with their details – so for each inbound response, you effectively use 3 SMS – that’s up to 300 SMS a month which equals 900 SMS all-inclusive with your keyword!
If you design your campaign to attract a lot of interest on an ongoing basis, then we would recommend that we set you up on your own Mobile Marketing System with your own inbound mobile number. Contact Hillsdon Mobile Marketing Services about this exclusive service.
What is the limit of characters I can have in my SMS response
The standard number of characters within an SMS is 160. However, we limit any SMS responses to 300 characters. This allows a little bit more scope for an overrun. We understand that it’s pretty difficult to get your message into the 160 character limit and have added this flexibility.
How many text changes can I make each month for my Keyword
Each month you get one change to the responsive text in your SMS. Any further changes will incur a $15 fee for each submission - feel free to send us a note via our contact form.
Can I have a mobile landing page linked with my SMS Keyword
Yes you can. Having a landing page (We call these Mobile Brochures) linked to your SMS Keyword is great if you want to list more about your business or your promotion. Your landing page will include up to 6 slider images (including your logo), one paragraph of text (500 characters max); a click to call; click to email, and a map.
How long does it take to setup my keyword
Once we have received your order, and we can identify and secure an available keyword and set up this up in the system – please allow up to 24 hours. We will then send you an invoice by email that is then payable via PayPal or credit card through PayPal (If payment is not received within 24 hours, we will remove the keyword).
If you need to include a landing page then, depending on the backlog, this could take anywhere from 1 – 3 business days. As soon as your order is placed, we will email you with the information we need to get started.
Where can I promote my Keyword
The short answer is “anywhere”. You can start on flyers, posters, business cards, print media advertisements, billboards, TV & Radio – you can seriously excel by going for the maximum exposure in an intelligent way. The Mobile phone has become a necessity in our lives and sending and receiving SMS has also become a part of our daily lives. If you need to get your information/marketing into the hands of a large number of prospects or customers, at a faster speed than your competitors, then SMS Keywords is the much better choice. There is also a good possibility for the SMS responses to be forwarded to their circle of friends – so let it go viral! This provides free leverage in your promotion campaign. Furthermore, SMS allows efficient and quality interaction between you and your customers. This helps you to understand your customers better, so that you can serve them better, which results in continued support from them and ultimately expanding your business.

A Couple of Tips
Don't forget to include your Contact Us page. This is possibly the most important page in your website and mobile users will be looking for it. All pages in your site should have a link to the contact page.
Have a Click to Call button on your mobile web pages to make it easy for people to call you. After all, people are already using their mobile phone to view your site. All they have to do is push the Click to Call button and they are calling you from their phone. Make it easy for people to call you, and you'll get more responses.
